Gar Yin Hune (left) and fellow Cantonese opera actor perform at the Chinese Freemasons’ Hall in Toronto, Ontario during the 1945 Lunar New Year celebrations. One of the few women legally permitted to enter Canada during the Exclusion Period (1923-1947), Gar Yin Hune entered Canada in the late 1930s as a member of a touring Chinese opera troupe. She married and remained in Canada, giving birth to project interviewee Bernice Hune in 1947.
